What is BrainDojo Kids?

A child sits down with a finger on the screen, draws one letter, and looks up to see it stay there. That small moment is what BrainDojo Kids is built around. Every course moves at the pace of a hand: trace the shape, copy it, write it from memory, then try a short challenge. Nothing scrolls past, nothing plays itself. The child is the one doing the work, and the focus that comes from that is the point.

Then the device gets passed around. Two to four players gather on one screen, roll the die, collect stars and coins, and land on squares that open cooperative games and face-to-face duels. The same app that a five-year-old uses quietly on their own becomes the thing a family laughs over after dinner.

Made for ages 3-6, with large controls, a clear portrait layout, and short sessions that fit a bedtime routine or a wait at the clinic. No ads and no account, ever.

Why Writing by Hand

The trace, copy, write sequence follows research on handwriting itself. Five-year-olds who printed letters by hand later showed reading-related brain activity when viewing those letters, while tracing or typing did not (James & Engelhardt, 2012). Thirty-eight children aged 3-5 practiced for three weeks, and the handwriting group recognized letters better than the typing group (Longcamp et al., 2005). In an EEG study of university students, handwriting engaged more widespread brain connectivity than typing (Van der Weel & Van der Meer, 2024).

None of this research studied this app. BrainDojo Kids simply tries to make time spent writing by hand into something children want to keep doing.

Three Kinds of Focus

Focus Through Handwriting

Every course walks the same four steps, so a child always knows what comes next and never has to guess.

  • Trace, copy, write, try: the shape fades away one step at a time until the child writes it alone.
  • Letters and numbers: Hiragana, Katakana, beginner Kanji, the alphabet, numbers, addition, and subtraction.
  • Finger or stylus: strokes follow the hand closely enough that a three-year-old can draw a clean line.

Cleared stages and best scores are saved for each player, so siblings never overwrite each other.

Focus That Stays Fun

Short activities, friendly feedback, and only three picks a day, so practice ends before it starts feeling like homework.

  • Counting animals, food, and colorful objects, and finger counting that leads into addition
  • Pair matching, flash memory, position memory, mazes, and weight comparison
  • Telling the time and animal quizzes

A stamp calendar fills in day by day, which is usually the reason a child comes back tomorrow.

Focus Together

Put the device down between you. Two to four players share one screen for a board game whose layout changes every match.

  • Roll, collect stars and coins, shop for items, and open surprises
  • Cooperative challenges where everyone works on the same puzzle
  • Face-to-face duels played from opposite sides of the screen

Most stars wins, with coins breaking a tie, so a game rarely ends the way anyone expected.

What They Wrote, Kept

Three tools turn handwriting into something a child can hold on to.

  • Letters: write a message one character per box, then save or share it as an image.
  • Writing: practice longer text on a squared writing sheet.
  • My Font: fill in the character chart in your child's own handwriting and the whole app switches to their letters.

Each version of My Font is saved with the date and age, so it doubles as a record of how their writing grows.

Calm for Parents Too

The things that usually make a kids' app hard to hand over are simply not here.

  • No ads and no account required
  • A daily time limit you can set, with a lock screen once it is reached
  • Parent settings protected by a parental gate
  • Separate stamps and learning records for each player
