What is MathCal?
MathCal is a math practice app for iPhone and iPad where kids write their answers by hand. Fast handwritten calculation drills build the mental math skills that form the foundation of elementary and junior high math, and they make good daily brain training, too.
Beyond the drills, 59 interactive Montessori lessons let kids work with their hands to see how math works. The four operations use beads, and other lessons use a ruler, a balance, pouring water, a clock, a protractor, a hundred grid, unit cubes and more, from fractions and decimals to geometry and measurement. Three daily picks are free every day: Today's Drill, Today's Challenge, and Today's Lesson. Everything else opens with a single one-time purchase, Unlock Everything (¥1,500 on the Japanese App Store). There is no subscription. A calendar stamp marks each finished session so progress is easy to see. The app has no ads, works offline once the handwriting model has been downloaded on first use, and is designed so children can use it safely on their own.
