Who Is AlphaGeorge For?

AlphaGeorge is a practice app for the Cambridge English exams, from A2 Key (KET) to C2 Proficiency (CPE). That is a narrower purpose than a general English app, and it decides a lot about who the app suits. Rather than describe an average user, here are the specific learners I had in mind, and what the app actually does for each of them.

Learners with a Cambridge Exam in View

This is the reader the app is built around. You have decided to take KET, PET, FCE, CAE or CPE, perhaps this year, and you want practice that points at that exam rather than at English in general.

AlphaGeorge maps each level to one exam: A2 to KET, B1 to PET, B2 to FCE, C1 to CAE, C2 to CPE. Within a level, the exercise formats follow the kinds of task the exams use, including word formation and key word transformation from B2 up, and open cloze at C1 and C2. Mid-course and end-course tests estimate your level, and when you reach the target, the app suggests you consider taking the official exam.

People Who Do Not Know Their Level

You may not be sure whether you are a B1 or a B2, and so not sure which exam to aim for. The diagnostic test at the start takes about five minutes, adapts to your answers, and recommends a starting level. You can retake it any time.

I think this is one of the more useful parts of the app for someone at the very beginning of exam planning. A rough, honest placement is a better starting point than a guess.

People Whose Study Time Comes in Pieces

The app is built for the phone and for short gaps: a train, a wait, a break between classes. The daily warm-up is a five-minute session of dictation and shadowing. The quick drills for vocabulary, conversation phrases, dictation and shadowing are short too. Reminders can be set for chosen days and times, with catch-up reminders later in the day if you have not practised.

If your study happens in one long evening session at a desk, a book of practice tests may suit you better. If it happens in ten-minute pieces, this is what AlphaGeorge is designed for.

Learners Who Need the Foundation, Not Only the Exam Tricks

Exam practice alone can leave gaps in grammar and vocabulary. Each AlphaGeorge unit covers grammar and reading, vocabulary, everyday English, writing and speaking, then a review and a progress check, and each unit starts with can-do goals so you know what it is for. The idea is to build the English underneath the exam as well as the exam technique.

Japanese Speakers

The interface is available in Japanese as well as English, and the can-do goals for each unit are written in both. For a learner in Japan preparing for a Cambridge exam, that removes one layer of difficulty from the menus, while the exercises themselves stay in English.

People Who Used ABC George

AlphaGeorge shares part of its name with ABC George, but it is a different app. ABC George is a free reader for whole English books from Project Gutenberg, with a dictionary and quizzes built from the words you look up. AlphaGeorge is a structured exam course with a free plan and a Premium subscription. If you enjoy ABC George, it is a good partner for AlphaGeorge, because reading widely helps with every exam paper. They do different jobs.

What It Deliberately Is Not

It is worth being clear about the limits. AlphaGeorge does not mark an essay you write freely, and it does not hold a conversation with you. Its writing lessons work from a model text, and its speaking exercises check set phrases with speech recognition. For feedback on your own writing and speaking, a teacher, or Cambridge’s free Write & Improve tool for writing, will do what the app cannot.

It is not an official Cambridge product, and its level estimates are not exam scores. It covers the Cambridge exams from KET to CPE, not other tests. It runs on iPhone. And the free plan has limits: five hearts, one lost for each wrong answer, refilling over time or by watching an ad. Premium removes that limit and adds a few features, such as replaying completed lessons.
