What is StudyX Smartpaper Letters?

StudyX Smartpaper Letters is a digital version of Montessori's classic sandpaper letters. It is designed with iPad and Apple Pencil in mind, and it also runs on iPhone, and you can write with your finger. Where the original boards hold about 26 letters of the alphabet, this app covers more than 10,000 characters: Japanese hiragana, katakana, and kanji, Chinese hanzi in Simplified and Traditional forms, Korean Hanja, the English alphabet in print and cursive, and numerals.

Type or handwrite any word or phrase, up to 100 characters, and practice it one character at a time. Each stroke is shown as an animation that you trace, and when you finish a character the app compares it with the model and gives a score. It is a one-time purchase with no ads, no in-app purchases, and no data collection. From a preschooler's first letters to elementary kanji drills to adult penmanship practice, one app covers all of it.

Key Features

Over 10,000 Characters

Practice Japanese hiragana, katakana, and kanji, Chinese hanzi, Korean Hanja, the English alphabet in print and cursive, and numerals, all in one app.

Practice Any Word You Like

Enter the characters you want to practice with the keyboard or by handwriting in Japanese, English, pinyin or zhuyin. Handwriting input needs a one-time download of the recognition model.

Stroke-by-Stroke Tracing Guides

The model draws one stroke at a time. Trace it, lift your pen or finger, and the next stroke begins, so you follow the correct stroke order from the first try.

A Score for Each Character

When you finish the last stroke of a character, its shape is compared with the model and scored. At the end you see the average for the whole word. The score is about shape. The app does not judge stroke order.

Montessori-Style Color Coding

Single Latin letters are shown on blue for vowels and red for consonants, and digits and kanji numerals on green, as with Montessori materials. Hiragana, katakana and other kanji are not colored.

Word Lists and Practice History

Save words to practice in lists and look back on your scores, all stored on your device.
