Getting Started with StudyX MathCal: Handwritten Math Practice for Kids

Most math apps ask kids to tap an answer. StudyX MathCal asks them to write it. In this post I want to explain what the app is, what a first session looks like, and how a few handwritten problems a day can grow into a lasting practice habit.
What Is StudyX MathCal?
StudyX MathCal is a math practice app for iPhone and iPad where kids answer every problem in their own handwriting. Fast handwritten calculation drills build the mental math that elementary and junior high school math stands on. They also make pleasant daily brain training for grown-ups.
The app includes 22 drill sets covering single-digit math, column math, fractions, decimals, geometry, and more, along with 59 interactive Montessori lessons that use beads to show how arithmetic really works. It is ad-free, does not track data, and works fully offline, so children can use it safely on their own.
Your First Session
Step 1: Download the app
StudyX MathCal is available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. There is no account to create, so once the app is installed, your child can go straight to their first drill.
Step 2: Open today’s free picks
Every day the app offers three free picks matched to your child’s grade: Today’s Drill, Today’s Challenge, and Today’s Lesson. For a first session, Today’s Drill is the natural starting point. It is a set of calculation problems at an appropriate level.
If your child is younger or new to a topic, you can start with Today’s Lesson instead. The Montessori bead lessons let kids move beads with their hands and see how the arithmetic works before they practice it.
Step 3: Write the answers by hand
When a problem appears, your child writes the answer directly on the screen with a finger or stylus, just as they would on paper. There is no keyboard to hunt through and no multiple-choice buttons to guess at. Only the problem and their own handwriting.
Why Handwriting Matters
Writing an answer by hand is a little slower than tapping a button, and I think that is exactly the point. Handwriting keeps a child actively producing the answer rather than passively recognizing it. This idea runs through everything we build at StudyX. Turning It into a Daily Practice
Habits grow out of small, repeatable wins, and MathCal is set up to keep those wins small.
- Keep sessions short. Each drill can be customized from 10 to 300 questions. I suggest starting at the low end so a session never feels like a chore, and raising the count only when your child asks for more.
- Lean on the daily picks. Today’s Drill, Today’s Challenge, and Today’s Lesson are free every day, so they make a natural anchor. Open the app, do today’s picks, done.
- Collect the stamps. A calendar stamp marks each finished session, so your child can see their progress build up day by day without anyone keeping score by hand.
- Practice anywhere. Full offline support means the daily session works in the car, on a trip, or anywhere else with no connection at all.
